The Uptown District is the main street commercial area of the former City of North Sacramento (annexed into City of Sacramento in 1964), comprised of Del Paso Boulevard, Arden Way and El Camino Avenue primarily. Del Paso Boulevard still exudes a 1940's main street character, and it's part of Historic Highway 40 which was a main route from San Francisco to Reno in the mid 1900's.
The Uptown District began a rebirth in the early 1990's as an Arts District and home to the Chamber's successful
Phantom Galleries program, helping launch the now popular "2nd Saturday" gallery openings that have spread throughout the region.
That notoriety has brought galleries, furniture stores, and upscale restaurants to the area along with many resident artists -
including the soon to be completed Surreal Estates artist live/work project.
The Uptown District business owners formed a Business Improvement District in 1987, self assessing a tax upon their business operations certificates through the City of Sacramento to promote a strong local economy in the area. The BID is administered by the North Sacramento Chamber of Commerce, which is made up of business and property owners, and used to operate the banner program, cleanup projects, phantom galleries, marketing the Uptown Brand, and advertising of the District as a destination.
In 2005, a Property Based Improvement District for Uptown was approved by property owners and accepted by the City of Sacramento. In 2006 this new group will mirror the BID effort, and work with the Chamber to promote the area, and to attract new investment and business that will allow the community to prosper and thrive.
You will find that Uptown has a warmth and congeniality that welcomes you, and with so many businesses being family owned and operated, you will find unique items, friendly service and a familiar smile. Wrap it Up, Dish it Up, or Turn it Up - Uptown awaits you!
Uptown - the Arts and Business District everyone is talking about in the Capitol City.
